Nifty June series may see uplift and bulls may take the Charge

Nifty is trading in situation to decide its direction for June series. Tomorrow we can see a lackluster movement in the market. Nifty has failed to sustain above its support of 4985 of 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level which is placed in the range of 4538 to 5700 during December 2011 to February 2012. Today it has closed at its support of 7 days EMA and we can expect trading for tomorrow around 4900-4950. We can see upward move in the market in June Series due to strength of nifty on its RSI where it is making higher highs and higher lows for some days and we should wait for breakout of trend line drawn on RSI . Moving Average crossover of 7 and 21 periods may take place if nifty trades at current prices for one or two days. MACD has given a singnal of crossover and we need to confirm a uptrend in nifty by looking at price movement yesterday . I am much optimist about market due to these technical indications and I think market has discounted fully all the bad   things . So keep watch on market and ready to ride on bull drive. Buy for this June series as may is going and bulls will take over the charge in June.

Stock Investing is not Science Thumb Rule

We said that to make your money work for you, you have to take charge of your own investments. You cannot leave it any more to your Relationship Manager, your Insurance Advisor, your Broker. Sounds threatening? Of course, it does. Let’s see why

What is the common mindset?

Complete the following sentence using one word. ‘Stock Investing is _________.’
What word came to your mind?
Most likely it will be one of these: Gamble, Risky, Unpredictable, Complex, etc. What do these words make you feel? Do they make you take up stock investing or make you avoid it? Most of us will feel like avoiding it. We are afraid of venturing in it on our own; hence hand it over to “experts”. However, it is these experts who have constantly blasted us with the myth: ‘You are better off leaving Stock Investing for the experts to handle.’ Just have a look at ads of any of the financial products and services; they all say the same thing. Now, if they were all such wonderful experts, how well did such expertise protect your wealth during the crash of 2008?

What should our mindset be?

The test of real expertise is wealth protection in bad times and solid growth in good times. So that, over a longer horizon covering boom and bust, you get attractive growth, say 20% CAGR. Of course there are a few rare, real experts (but you won’t see them on TV every day, predicting the market) who have consistently been doing this.

too far-fetched? Consider this:

  • Benjamin Graham, one of the Gurus of stock investing, did not have a background of finance when he started investing. However, he learnt stock investing, eventually pioneering the concept of value investing; his philosophy was simple: Buy great businesses at extremely cheap prices.
  • Warren Buffett, one of the greatest stock investors of all time, started investing when he was 12, without any formal finance education. He regarded Benjamin Graham as his Guru and today is amongst the richest people in the world.
  • The common thread binding these great investors is the same. They weren’t experts when they started. But they learnt to do it on their own by following a simple and sound framework of investing and sticking to it with discipline.
  • It involved buying into a great business with the mindset of an owner. Finding such a business might require some search and analysis, but is something you can certainly manage.
  • Most importantly, sooner or later, the market gives you many opportunities to buy such wonderful businesses at throw-away prices; or sell your holdings at unbelievably high prices. The proof: Look at the 52-week Highs and lows of any of the Sensex stocks.

You just need to look at 5 Financial Parameters to shortlist a wonderful company!

We say that a wonderful business worth investing in has 3 important characteristics: An Excellent Financial Track Record, A Sustainable Moat and Respectable Management. The first one – An Excellent Financial Track record – is a Go/No-go criterion and hence is critical. It will prevent you from investing in the wrong companies and losing money.

So what we think about when we talk about company financials?

A big, fat, 100-page Annual Report with reams of data that leave most of us confused!  It seems too difficult, too complex, needing too much time – which you don’t have! However, truth is always simple. Let us now see a simple and powerful lens through which we can identify companies with an Excellent Financial Track record.
The answer is........................
You just need to look at 5 Financial Parameters to shortlist a wonderful company!
From all the 100+ parameters, all you need are just 5 of them! Earnings per share (EPS); Net Sales; Book Value per share (BVPS); Return on Invested Capital (ROIC); and, Debt-to-Net Profit ratio. Seen together and over 10 years these 5 reveal the truth. Let’s see how!

What is the first thing that you will look for in a company before investing? You will check whether it is making Profits, consistently! Since we will be shareholders, we need to look at the profit it earns per share. Hence the first parameter to look for is EPS – Earnings per Share.

How can a company continue to earn profits year after year? By selling more and more every year. Hence, the second parameter to look for is Net Sales.

To increase its sales in the long run, a company will need to expand its capacity. Book Value per Share, BVPS tells us how much a company is investing in expanding its capacity. That’s the third parameter.

Companies in the most basic sense are money-using and money-making machines.  How do we rate a machine? Simple, we look at what it produces in relation to what it uses i.e. efficiency. Companies produce profits using the capital invested (both equity and debt). Hence to know the efficiency with which a company uses its capital, we need to look at Return on Invested Capital (ROIC). That’s the fourth parameter

Finally, if a company borrows money, it should be able to repay it without serious difficulty over a reasonable period of time. Debt-to-Net Profit ratio tells us the number of years in which the company will be able to repay the debt. Hence the fifth parameter to look for is its Debt-to-Net Profit Ratio.

How can you be absolutely sure if a company’s financial track record is great or not?

We have checked over 1500 companies and arrived at a gold standard that only the best meet: A company that has been growing its EPS, Net Sales and BVPS by 12%+ year-on-year; has a ROIC of over 12% every year; and can pay off its debt in less than 3 years i.e. a Debt-to-Net Profit ratio of 3 or less – has a great Financial Track Record. Companies meeting this gold standard are wonderful companies worth short listing.
Such companies are quite likely to have a moat – a sustainable competitive advantage, which has allowed it to post great numbers. So, now you know how important these 5 parameters are!

MY FAVORITE TOP 10 TRADING THOUGHTS

Based on my own experiences as a trader and on conversations with many top analysts and traders , here is a top-10 list of observations I would like to pass along to you in the trading business. You may recognize some of these thoughts as market clichés, but they have stood the test of time and should be helpful for you as well.
1. You only have three choices when you are in a bad position, and it is not hard to figure out what to do: (1) Get out, (2) double up, or (3) spread it off. I have always found getting out to be the best of all three choices.
2. No opinion on the market or you are doubtful about market direction? Then stay out. Remember, when in doubt, stay out.

3. Don’t ever let anyone know how big your wallet is, and don’t ever let anyone know how small it is either.
4. If you snooze, you lose. Know your markets, when they trade, and what reports will affect the market price.
5. The markets will always let you in on the losers; the market’s job is to keep you out of winners. Dump the dogs and ride the winning tide.
6. Stops are not for sissies.
7. Plan your trade, then trade your plan. He who fails to plan, plans to fail.
8. Buy the rumor and sell the fact. Watch for volatility in these situations; it usually marks tops or bottoms in the markets.
9. Buy low, sell high. Or buy it when nobody wants it, and sell it when everybody has to have it!
10. It’s okay to lose your shirt, just don’t lose your pants; that is where your wallet is.
One last thought I want to leave with you. It applies not only to every- day life but to trading the markets as well: Success is measured not so much by the wealth or position you have gained, but rather by the obstacles you have overcome to succeed!
Good luck in all of your investing and trading endeavors. And, remember, you are trading to take money out of the market, not to build a big ac- count to satisfy your ego or to invest in your grandchildren’s retirement fund. Be sure to take money out of the market for yourself and immediate needs so you can enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Benefits of Futures Trading

Futures contracts perform two important functions of price discovery and price risk management with reference to the given commodity. It is useful to all segments of economy. It is useful to producer because he can get an idea of the price likely to prevail at a future point of time and therefore can decide between various competing commodities, the best that suits him.

Futures trading enables the consumer get an idea of the price at which the commodity would be available at a future point of time. He can do proper costing and also cover his purchases by making forward contracts. The futures trading is very useful to the exporters as it provides an advance indication of the price likely to prevail and thereby help the exporter in quoting a realistic price and thereby secure export contract in a competitive market. Having entered into an export contract, it enables him to hedge his risk by operating in futures market.

Other benefits of futures trading are:

Commodity Investment Strategies

Capturing the full benefits of commodity exposure has been a challenge in the past.

Investing in physical commodities such as a barrel of oil, a herd of cattle or a bushel of wheat is of course, quite impractical, so investors have tended to look for commodity exposure either by purchasing commodity related equities or through actively managed futures accounts.

The onset of investment vehicles that track commodity futures indices has provided investors with another option for gaining exposure to commodities that may offer better potential to capture the full benefits of the asset class.

Investment vehicles that track commodity futures indices are not the same as actively managed futures accounts.

TOP 10 RULES FOR TECHNICAL TRADING

 Study the charts for Trends

Study long-term charts. Begin a chart analysis with monthly and weekly charts spanning several years. A larger scale map of the market provides more visibility and a better long-term perspective on a market. Once the long-term has been established, then consult daily and intra-day charts. A short-term market view alone can often be deceptive. Even if you only trade the very short term, you will do better if you're trading in the same direction as the intermediate and longer term trends.

2. Recognize  the Trend and Go With the Trend

Determine the trend and follow it. Market trends come in many sizes – long-term, intermediate-term and short-term. First, determine which one you're going to trade and use the appropriate chart. Make sure you trade in the direction of that trend. Buy dips if the trend is up. Sell rallies if the trend is down. If you're trading the intermediate trend, use daily and weekly charts. If you're day trading, use daily and intra-day charts. But in each case, let the longer range chart determine the trend, and then use the shorter term chart for timing.

3. Look at  the Lows and Highs of stock

Find support and resistance levels. The best place to buy a market is near support levels. That support is usually a previous reaction low. The best place to sell a market is near resistance levels. Resistance is usually a previous peak. After a resistance peak has been broken, it will usually provide support on subsequent pullbacks. In other words, the old "high" becomes the new low. In the same way, when a support level has been broken, it will usually produce selling on subsequent rallies – the old "low" can become the new "high."

4.Calculate  How Far to Bounce or dip back

Measure percentage retracements. Market corrections up or down usually retrace a significant portion of the previous trend. You can measure the corrections in an existing trend in simple percentages. A fifty percent retracement of a prior trend is most common. A minimum retracement is usually one-third of the prior trend. The maximum retracement is usually two-thirds. Fibonacci retracements of 38% and 62% are also worth watching. During a pullback in an uptrend, therefore, initial buy points are in the 33-38% retracement area.

5. Draw the Line of trend

Draw trend lines. Trend lines are one of the simplest and most effective charting tools. All you need is a straight edge and two points on the chart. Up trend lines are drawn along two successive lows. Down trend lines are drawn along two successive peaks. Prices will often pull back to trend lines before resuming their trend. The breaking of trend lines usually signals a change in trend. A valid trend line should be touched at least three times. The longer a trend line has been in effect, and the more times it has been tested, the more important it becomes.

6. Follow that Average

Follow moving averages. Moving averages provide objective buy and sell signals. They tell you if existing trend is still in motion and help confirm a trend change. Moving averages do not tell you in advance, however, that a trend change is imminent. A combination chart of two moving averages is the most popular way of finding trading signals. Some popular futures combinations are 4- and 9-day moving averages, 9- and 18-day, 5- and 20-day. Signals are given when the shorter average line crosses the longer. Price crossings above and below a 40-day moving average also provide good trading signals. Since moving average chart lines are trend-following indicators, they work best in a trending market.

7. Learn the Turns

Track oscillators. Oscillators help identify overbought and oversold markets. While moving averages offer confirmation of a market trend change, oscillators often help warn us in advance that a market has rallied or fallen too far and will soon turn. Two of the most popular are the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Stochastics. They both work on a scale of 0 to 100. With the RSI, readings over 70 are overbought while readings below 30 are oversold. The overbought and oversold values for Stochastics are 80 and 20. Most traders use 14-days or weeks for stochastics and either 9 or 14 days or weeks for RSI. Oscillator divergences often warn of market turns. These tools work best in a trading market range. Weekly signals can be used as filters on daily signals. Daily signals can be used as filters for intra-day charts.

8. Know the Warning Signs

Trade MACD. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator (developed by Gerald Appel) combines a moving average crossover system with the overbought/oversold elements of an oscillator. A buy signal occurs when the faster line crosses above the slower and both lines are below zero. A sell signal takes place when the faster line crosses below the slower from above the zero line. Weekly signals take precedence over daily signals. An MACD histogram plots the difference between the two lines and gives even earlier warnings of trend changes. It's called a "histogram" because vertical bars are used to show the difference between the two lines on the chart.

9. Trend or Not a Trend

Use ADX. The Average Directional Movement Index (ADX) line helps determine whether a market is in a trending or a trading phase. It measures the degree of trend or direction in the market. A rising ADX line suggests the presence of a strong trend. A falling ADX line suggests the presence of a trading market and the absence of a trend. A rising ADX line favors moving averages; a falling ADX favors oscillators. By plotting the direction of the ADX line, the trader is able to determine which trading style and which set of indicators are most suitable for the current market environment.

10. Know the Confirming Signs

Include volume and open interest. Volume and open interest are important confirming indicators in futures markets. Volume precedes price. It's important to ensure that heavier volume is taking place in the direction of the prevailing trend. In an uptrend, heavier volume should be seen on up days. Rising open interest confirms that new money is supporting the prevailing trend. Declining open interest is often a warning that the trend is near completion. A solid price uptrend should be accompanied by rising volume and rising open interest.
